Occupational therapy

Is a related service that supports a student's performance and participation in the educational setting. OT's use meaningful activities to support the development of motor, visual processing, sensory integration, social-emotional, and cognitive skills needed to engage in their daily school routine. In the school setting, OT may focus on academics, play, self-care, social participation, transitions, and vocational skills.

OT services can be provided by an Occupational Therapist (OT) or a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), under the supervision of an OT. OT school-based services can be delivered through direct service, consultation service, response to intervention (RTI), and curriculum/programming. The goal of the OT is to promote student abilities and support them with new skill gains, adaptations, or accommodations so that each child is as independent in their school activities as possible.
